To enjoy the Piano music, the instrument has to be in a good condition. A new Piano just purchased has to be cared for properly so that it plays well and gives full musical pleasure to the player as well as the listeners.
There are more than 200strings in your Piano, stretched at high tension across the frame. The Piano has to be tuned by a technician, carefully adjusting the tension of each string to ensure that the strings sound in harmony with each other and also play in standard pitch. Generally, the Piano has to be tuned twice in a year but in the case of a new Piano of it new strings are provided for the existing Piano, the tuning has to be done 3 or 4 times in the first year as the new strings are like to stretch.
The temperature and humidity of the Piano room will also affect the instrument. Hot and humid weather will make the strings and other moving parts of the Piano expand and cold and dry. All the parts of the Piano will not expand or contract at the same rates. These factors will make the Piano sound out of tune. Hence core has to be taken to maintain the temperature of the Piano room at moderate levels always.
The Piano has to be kept away from heating ducts, hot air registers and radiators as they will affect the instrument as well as create cracks in the Piano soundboard. The Piano should not be exposed to direct sunlight as it will spoil the finish of the Piano.
As the carpet and furniture in the room will absorb sound and affect the same they have to be adjusted suitably.
The Piano has to be cleaned with a soft cloth, slightly dampered and wrung out and using Piano cleaning polishes and not wooden polish. The tops of the keys have to be cleaned properly and you have to make them dry after cleaning.
As there are many delicate parts inside the Piano, it is better to engage a technician to clean them.
By taking proper care of the Piano, you can ensure long life, optimal playing condition and good resale value for your Piano.
